Care and Enhancement

Gold does tarnish over time when exposed to salty air, chlorine, sulfur, humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, household bleach and other strong chemicals. To protect your gold jewelry from being tarnished as much as possible, we recommend that you store your jewelry in a safe and dry place when engaging in the activities below,

  • Household and outdoor chores
  • Showering, bathing, or swimming, hot tubs, hot springs and the ocean
  • Using lotion, hair products, fragrances and other cosmetics
  • Exercising at the gym or during contact sports
  • Preparing meals

Cleaning

There are two options to clean your gold jewelry: a homemade cleaner or a commercial cleaner. The homemade cleaner can be made with ingredients in most kitchen which includes dish detergent, baking soda, lemon juice, olive oil, white vinegar, and salt. In short, mix cleansing agent with warm water (make sure to wet your jewelry with a damp washcloth first), then wash gently with your choice of cleansing agent (dish detergent is the most recommended). Rinse the jewelry piece with the damp washcloth. Dry it with a microfiber cloth. The commercial cleaner can be purchase through third parties. Keep in mind, these cleansers are extremely strong chemicals. It is best to start with gentle homemade cleaner (choice of yours) and use commercial cleaners when tarnish is severe.

Polishing

Polishing is a great alternative way to clean your gold jewelry if tarnish is not severe. Polishing helps make the jewelry’s surface look smooth and shiny. Use special gold cloth, microfiber, or other soft nonabrasive cloth. And do not use paper towels or tissues to polish your jewelry as they contain fibers that can scratch the gold. When polishing, use long back-and-forth motions that mirror the grain of the gold. Do not rub in circles, as this will magnify any tiny scratches. Also, change to a different section of your cloth frequently to avoid placing tarnish back on the gold.

Storing

Place the gold in an area that is dark and dry, such as a jewelry box or drawer. Allow plenty of room for each piece of jewelry. Storing gold in airtight plastic bags with anti-tarnish strips is a great preventative measure. It is best to store your jewelry separated from one another so that pieces are not touching each other. Storing your gold jewelry in this manner ensures attractive look of your jewelry for many years.
